Interview with M. Beniamino Brioschi: Michael Magnesi, Defeat, Pride and the Road Ahead
M. Beniamino Brioschi Reflects on Magnesi’s Defeat and Future
Q: Mr. Brioschi, Before the Fight, You Publicly Predicted a Michael Magnesi Victory. Looking Back Now, Did You Simply Get It Wrong?
A: Not really. Michael did everything a world-class fighter is supposed to do. He fought with courage, determination and an incredible work rate.
The official result says unanimous decision for Garner and we respect that completely, but anyone who watched the fight knows it was a hard, physical and competitive battle from start to finish.
Michael lost with honor, but he could have won as well. Boxing is decided by judges, not by social media. And yes, sometimes even the best predictions turn out to be wrong.
Q: Several British Media Outlets Described the Fight as a “Phone Booth War.” Do You Agree With That Assessment?
A: Absolutely. It was a brutal inside fight. Twelve rounds of pressure, exchanges and determination.
Michael never took a backward step. That’s the type of fighter he is. He doesn’t look for shortcuts and he certainly doesn’t look for excuses. Those are the fights people remember.
Q: What Happens Next for Michael Magnesi?
A: First of all, he rests. He has earned that right. Physically and mentally he gave everything he had. But let me be very clear: don’t worry about the Lone Wolf. He will be back. Stronger, smarter and even more motivated than before.
Q: Will There Be a Rematch With Ryan Garner?
A: I don’t know. At this moment I don’t think that’s necessarily the right road. Sometimes the smartest move is not the most obvious one. We will evaluate every opportunity carefully.
Q: So You’re Saying You Don’t Want a Rematch Because You’re Afraid Garner Wins Again?
A: Come on… seriously? If there is one word nobody has ever associated with Michael Magnesi, it’s fear.
Michael has built his entire career by accepting difficult fights. Fear has absolutely nothing to do with it. Strategy does.
Q: Anthony Cacace Recently Suggested That if Michael Had Won the Title, He Would Gladly Have Fought Him Again Because He Would Have Beaten Him Anyway. What’s Your Response?
A: I think Anthony Cacace is not only a very good fighter but also a very funny man. He enjoys making people smile.
But I’ve always believed that fortune favors the brave, not necessarily the witty. If he faced Michael Magnesi today, I don’t think the outcome would be as predictable as he suggests.
Q: After the Fight You Were Seen Talking for Quite a While With Alessandra Branco, Dr. Davide Bianchi and Mr. Frank Warren. What Was Going on?
A: Frank Warren was the host of a fantastic event. Everything was organized professionally and successfully. I simply wanted to congratulate him personally and thank him for the hospitality.
Q: That’s What You Say… But Boxing Fans Don’t Believe in Coincidences. Was It About a Rematch? A Future Fight? A New Project?
A: I’ve already answered that question. It was a conversation based on mutual respect and courtesy. And honestly, I also told him I liked his outfit. Not every conversation in boxing hides a secret negotiation.
Q: Looking Back Objectively, Was Ryan Garner the Better Fighter That Night?
A: The scorecards say he was and I respect that. Ryan Garner fought an excellent fight in front of his home crowd and earned the victory. He deserves credit for that. Champions respect champions.
We are not looking for excuses and we are certainly not questioning his achievement.
Q: What Impressed You Most About Michael Despite the Defeat?
A: His heart. Many fighters talk about courage. Michael demonstrates it. He never stopped trying to win. He never accepted defeat inside the ring. Even in the final rounds he was pushing forward and looking for opportunities. That mentality cannot be taught.
Q: Finally, What Message Would You Like to Send to Michael’s Supporters Across Italy and Around the World?
A: One defeat means absolutely nothing in the life of a true champion. History is full of great fighters who lost important fights and came back stronger.
Michael Magnesi left Southampton without the belt, but with his reputation enhanced. The Lone Wolf is still here. The story is not over. In fact, I believe the most exciting chapters are still ahead of us.
